Please remove from upon us the plague of the artists
Gentrification is a thorny topic. On the one hand, it revitalizes neighborhoods, improves housing stock and tax base, and decreases crime. On the other hand, it drives out lower income families, destroys working-class communities, and creates a pretentious urban monoculture where once was a diversity of ethnic neighborhoods.
A local gentrification battle has a typically New York twist: Ultra-Orthodox Jews who have lived in Williamsburg for generations vs. young newly-arrived hipsters fleeing Manhattan rents. Think Chaim Potok vs. Amy Sohn.
But the Williamsburg Chasidim have a secret weapon: God. (Translation here.)
