Free speech

Daniel Pipes gave a speech at American University. As par for the course, his speech was attended by a protest action. It was milder than some and didn't prevent Pipes from speaking, although from the description it sounds annoying to those who just wanted to hear him. What's interesting is that the leader of the disruption was the head of the local ACLU chapter.

You know, the organization which is supposed to be a watchdog for protecting freedom of speech.

Technically Matt Bowles wasn't quite violating the principles of his organization, and he justified his behavior by saying he attended the lecture in his capacity as a private citizen. But you have to wonder if he really gets what the ACLU is supposed to be about. If I had been thinking about re-joining the ACLU, whose work I totally support in principle, I would be seriously reconsidering. Especially since Mr. Bowles also (in his capacity as a private citizen?) writes articles using phrases such as "Israel's colonial apartheid regime."
