About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Condi in 2008 Dept.

Some transcripts: Edited by a local station. See what was left out. Rice does a little aikido on Kerrey. Chris Matthews misrepresents Rice. Bill Herbert factchecks some attempts to take issue with Rice's testimony. Huge link roundup of reactions to Rice's testimony.

If you want a Rashomon moment, read this and compare to the above.

This is interesting:

Judge Napolitano, on Fox News this afternoon, presented word stats on the Condi appearance before the 9/11 Commission today: a total of 25,000 words were spoken, 15,000 by Condi, 10,000 by the Commission members. A 60/40 split. She was there under oath supposedly to answer the Commission's questions. Either they are incapable of asking succinct questions or, shudder, there was some grandstanding going on. We saw today the precise reason why President Bush resisted for so long the calls to have her appear.

The other point he made, in reference to her being admonished to "answer the question", is that she appeared there under oath and, therefore, was required, under threat of purjury, to answer each and every question as completely and throroughly as she could, regardless of how her answer might impact a Commissioner's alloted time.

Another reaction. (Beverage-soaked monitor warning.)

Slight correction: the testimony edit wasn't by a local station, but by CNN. I saw the same thing done with filmed footage on CNN international a couple of weeks later, when in Brazil. I called the local station (radio) and the newscaster inserted his voice to indicate where the edit had occured. The original was a seamless exchange - there was no indication at all that a significant portion had been removed, to misrepresent what had been said.
