About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Euroweenies Dept.

Nelson Ascher:
Well, fed up with cheap Euro anti-Americanism as I was, I couldnt help reminding those non-simplistic peoples that the US saved their sorry skins at least three times in the last century, and saved the Europeans from other Europeans mainly, because WW1, WW2 and the Cold War were actually one single and huge European civil war.

What do you think they answered me when they were unable to question the facts? Obviously that America did it out of self-interest. Eventually, I found a metaphor to use against them and, up to now, none of them has been able to fight or "deconstruct" it.

What I tell them is the following:

Look, what do you prefer, to be saved by a doctor who does it for money because he too has bills to pay or to be killed by an idealistic murderer for free?

Here we go again

The "Jewish neocons manipulated us into Iraq to protect Israel" smear is once again revived, this time by failed Middle East envoy Anthony Zinni (who perhaps, like fellow former Bush admin official Richard Clarke, has an axe to grind?).

Last year's attempt at this smear took place at a crucial juncture: right before the beginning of the war. It caused much discussion in the blogosphere; I wrote about it here (and you can link back from that post to the previous ones). I think my refutations of the smear's arguments still hold: mainly, that we had so many good reasons to depose Saddam that had nothing to do with Jews or Israel; and secondarily, that there are plenty of neo-cons who aren't Jewish, but the perpetrators of this particular smear always give their game away by only fingering the Jewish ones.

Last year Matt Welch pointed out how many of the critics of the Jewish neo-cons had ties to the Saudis. That's certainly something to keep in mind during this rerun.

Moderate Muslims need a place to go

Mary has a roundup of stories on moderate Muslims being squeezed out of their mosques by extremist Wahabis. This is happening all over the US, and in Europe too. (Stephen Schwartz writes about moderate Bosnian Muslims pressured by Wahabis imported from and funded by the Saudis).

One of the reasons the extremists are so successful is that the moderates are outnumbered locally and can be easily threatened with excommunication. There is no established liberal Islam for them to go to. I hope seeing so many of these stories in one place enables these moderate Muslims to connect the dots, form an association, and start pushing back.

Virtual Shavuot pajama party

You need a certain critical mass of people (plus the will) for an all night tikkun, and Naomi Chana's and Rachel's respective congregations just don't have it. To their credit both of them are loyally helping lead their own congregations' shorter observances rather than leaving town.

But virtual critical mass - that's a different matter. If you too want to observe the custom of studying all night the first night of Shavuot, and you don't have enough warm bodies to do it with, get in touch with Naomi for a late-night session by IM. BYO cheesecake.

Having paid my dues developing and leading ritual in small congregations, I will be here, as last year.

More on Shavuot.

Anyone but Kerry Dept.

Why am I so adamant that Kerry should not become President, in spite of the fact that I disagree with Bush on so many domestic issues? I love a parade

Just wanted to remind people the annual Salute to Israel Parade is tomorrow. It starts at 11 AM, at 57th and 5th Ave, and goes up 5th Avenue for about 30 blocks, and there's a concert in Central Park afterwards. This event draws over 100,000 people either marching or lining 5th Avenue waving and cheering and singing.

UPDATE: Mary has a report.

Previous post on the Abu Ghraib scandal here, and use that post to link back to previous posts. I've compiled 4-5 since the scandal broke, with lots of links to military law and analysis, Iraqi opinion, the varied responses from the West, historical analogies, and much more.

Read the book

The good news is that the wonderful novel Bee Season is being made into a movie. The bad news is that the actors chosen for the 2 adult leads are even more inappropriate than the usual Hollywood glamming-up of ordinary people. And it would be nice to pick Jewish actors to play Jews in such a Jewish story.

Nick Berg update

I was defending Nick Berg's father and urging people to cut him some slack, in his grief. All we knew up to this point was that he had signed an A.N.S.W.E.R. antiwar petition, which many sane normal people have done, who would not otherwise sign on to some of the movement's more extreme attitudes.

But I find it hard to make excuses for Michael Berg at this point. The terrorists who cold-bloodedly hacked off his son's head were more compassionate than George Bush? Talk about avoiding reality in a search for scapegoats.

The purpose of art

While browsing in a used CD store I found the live recording of Laurie Anderson's performances in NYC on September 19-20, 2001. I just now got around to listening to it.
