About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Carnival of the Protestors, the sequel

Previous Carnival of the Protestors entries here, here, here, here, and here.

So I'm spending all day home sick, but I am going to be back out there tomorrow.

Today's big event was supposed to be A31. (August 31, get it?)

To Our Fellow New Yorkers: We'd like to take this opportunity to inform you that we will be conducting acts of non-violent civil disobedience and direct action on Tuesday, August 31st, during the middle of the Republican National Convention. At 4pm, we will occupy the areas around war profiteers, predator corporations and Republican donors. At 7pm, we will create "free speech zones" places around Madison Square Garden to express our outrage and to create the kind of world we'd like to see through music and dancing and free food and debate. If we are told to move, we will sit down and refuse.

We truly apologize for any inconvenience this might cause you. We live in New York City too. We know how annoying it can be to miss a train or show up late to work.

We know how annoying it can be to have your ham-handed aging-SDSer-Tom Hayden-inspired tactics backfire on you as thousands of New Yorkers decide to vote for Bush after having to step over and around you folks, not to mention being subjected to your pathetic slogans. But thanks for the free food.
Command Post has more.

Not in Our Name coyly intimates violence. Terry McAuliffe washes his hands. More Bush voters. At this rate New York might tip for Bush. bring it on, suckas!

Remember the movement to infiltrate the RNC with anti-Bush "volunteers"?

A complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan said Secret Service agents spotted Frampton carrying a "Bush-Cheney '04" placard on the walkway behind Cheney's box at 9:30 p.m. Monday. One agent instructed him to keep moving. Frampton began to move away, then turned back in the direction of Cheney's box and began shouting anti-Bush administration slogans. He then started to climb over a low wall separating Cheney's box from the walkway and got within 10 feet of Cheney before the Secret Service agents tried to restrain him. As the agents grabbed him, Frampton swung his right elbow in the direction of one agent, the court papers said. He continued to struggle with the agents and shout at Cheney as he was dragged away and handcuffed, the complaint said.
Earth to protestors: There are real terrorists (domestic or otherwise) who really think blowing up the RNC and/or assassinating Bush, Cheney, Powell, or Rumsfeld would accomplish something. (If that happened, believe me, John Kerry would have even less chance of winning this election than he does now.) New York is on edge. The RNC is on edge. No one cares if you are "non-violent" and just "shouting slogans." You should be grateful you didn't get beaten senseless. More Bush voters. I can feel the island tilting . . .

Matt Yglesias on discursive everything-and-the-kitchen-sink carnival-like protests. Contrast with Rick Perlstein's comments on Martin Luther King's discipline and focus.

While I tried to sleep off my sore throat head cold yesterday morning, Mary attended the Monday Protest Warrior vigil in front of the UFPJ office.

Neal Boortz has some thoughts on how each convention has treated its protestors.

"Dear MSNBC executive monkeys . . . Please tell little Ronnie Reagan to shut the hell up when the adults are talking. . . " and more.

Another report from the National Review party last night.

It was the consensus of the Republicans I spoke to at this particular bash that Democrats were mean and intolerant. Of course they were wearing buttons like "Terrorists for Kerry" featuring a picture of bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.
I don't remember meeting this guy but I have this button on my purse strap (which has garnered me many compliments). The button isn't "intolerant," it's just a statement of fact. Intolerance would be stuff like this.
