Carnival of the RNC, inside

Previous Carnival of the Protestors entries here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

How geeky am I? I watched the RNC this evening on C-SPAN live streaming while reading comments at Allah and LGF (do not click this link if you have dial-up). In NYC, 15 blocks from MSG. (Well, I almost went to the YR hotel party but I'm still a bit under the weather, I am going to several parties and maybe another PW event tomorrow, so I stayed in again tonight. Those sleek "hot" Young Republicans intimidate me a bit.)
But I am not as geeky as these people.

Cheney intruder pink protestor pix. Speaking of Cheney, this is hilarious:

Lynn Cheney introduces her husband, who, as a teenager in Casper, Wyoming, did not, like the other kids, cruise back and forth between root beer stands. He did not do the twist. She knew he was the guy for her. Imagine Dick Cheney as the love of your life! That's the way it is for them. Who are we to question love? Now, here he is. The grinding, grim flatness of Dick Cheney is just what it is to be Dick Cheney. He is what he is. It doesn't play to the big hall terribly well, especially not after the great revivalist Miller, but what did you expect? Perhaps even less. He lays it out. And you can take it or leave it. He's not doing the twist. He's Dick Cheney.
First you roll around on your tongue a piquant, zesty chunk of Zell Miller, then you cleanse your palate with Dick Cheney.

Bono put in an apppearance. I like Bono. He cares more about getting the job done than who's doing it.

Good fiskings of Rudy and Zell. I thought both speeches were excellent and said things that needed to be said. I share both men's frustration with the excusing appeasing Democratic left. But both fiskings make some good points and are useful correctives to the Allah/LGF echo chamber.

(Andrew, I too would prefer the Platonic Ideal of the pristine untried Obama to the gritty reality of the long, checkered career of Zell, but that's comparing apples to oranges. When Obama gets old and seasoned enough to run for president, he'll have some dings too. And you can defend Democratic hawks all you like against Miller's "slurs," but Miller's and Guiliani's stereotypes are unfortunately accurate in that hawks are not running the Democratic Party and Kerry isn't one of them. Miller read out a long laundry list of Kerry's positions over the past 20 years, but you don't refute them. You are doing the same thing Kerry and his media pals have done to the Swift Vets: smear them without refuting their charges.)

Until video is available of the historic spanking of Chris Matthews by Zell Miller, this synopsis will have to do. More here. Yet more here.

[ UPDATE: Here it is. (Scroll down for the link.) Having seen it, I admire Matthews for hanging in there and rolling with the punches. ]

Eric tackles the most important debate of the convention.

David Adesnik takes another swig of Koolaid.

Last week, York tentatively suggested that the Swift Vets were beginning to cut in to Kerry's poll numbers. Liberals are making the same point in order to show that GOP lies are what's sinking their candidate, not his own inconsistency. I disagree with both. My gut says that Cambodia is not enough to hurt Kerry and that running on his war record is still the best way to go.
My boy, either Oxford or Greenwich Village may be taken separately with no ill effects, but the combination produces softening of the brain.

David gets it absolutely right about the Democrat's cult of victimization, but gets it wrong about Schwarzenegger, who does "share his party's ideology." He made it very clear that he is a Republican precisely because he is "enchanted by the free markets and unprecendented opportunities" touted by his party.

UPDATE: Heh.
Lileks on Miller, Cheney, and much more.
Matt says Miller "frightened" him, and gets spanked by his commenters.

UPDATE: Apparently Zell's speech was toned down from the original. Yeah, I know. But now I wonder if he just went out there and said whatever he wanted anyway.

UPDATE: Scott says "New York is not just Manhattan." Bush took his advice.

(Explanation of the title: the next post is called "Carnival of the Protestors, outside." But I'm going to go to bed now and post it tomorrow.) Also Carnival of the Protest Warriors.

"...I too would prefer the Platonic Ideal of the pristine untried Obama...."

Uh, what? He's been in office seven years.

"...Zell. I thought both speeches were excellent...."

I gather all that lying his face off doesn't bother you?

Was it September 11th that changed Zell Miller'sopinion, do you think?

Did you notice the White House reaction?

I don't have any questions about your having doubts about John Kerry's possible policies or attitudes; that's entirely debatable and questionable.

Other stuff I don't understand, such as why you believe Bush's strong words translate into competent execution of policies. Has attacking Iraq (which I supported, recall) actually made us safer from terrorism?

Has Bush competently handled attacking and defeating al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and worldwide?

Has Bush made us safer in preventing nuclear arms in North Korea? Has he displayed a clear and consistent policy in regard to Iran, and its potential nuclear arms?

How do you see his tough talk translating into effective policies? Has his government, overall, been honest, as well as competent?

Where's the case for any of this?

Rather than answering all your questions here, let me refer you to my many "Anyone But Kerry" posts.

I don't agree with many of Bush's positions, but I don't agree with many of Kerry's either. But Bush trumps Kerry on the most important issues this year, which are foreign policy, and although both propose too many "big govt" solutions for my taste, also Bush understands entrepreneurship and wealth creation better than Kerry.

"Rather than answering all your questions here, let me refer you to my many 'Anyone But Kerry' posts."

Judith, if I'd not read every single one, and not been a quite dedicated reader of yours, I'd not have asked the questions.

I don't want to call you on the phone to try to understand these questions. I ask you in writing in hopes you can explain your thinking in writing. I don't imply, of course, that there's any obligation involved. I'd just like to toss these questions back and forth in writing in hopes of greater mutual understanding, and that, of course, perhaps maybe another person or two might be swayed.

We've got a bit less than two months. Perhaps this might be, if not altogether fun, somewhat interesting?

Okay, Gary.

Yes, using the yardstick of every long-term nation-building effort attempted over the past 60 years, Bush's handling of Iraq is competent. More important, he has not lost sight of the ultimate goal, which is a government accountable to its people and an economy based on market forces integrated into the global economy (which go hand in hand with accountability).

Kerry is willing to settle for "stability," doesn't think the wogs are capable of democracy and market-driven economies. Kerry wants to abandon the Iraqis like he aided and abetted abandoning the Vietnamese 35 years ago. Our occupations of Afganistan and Iraq have not caused a refugee problem, but Kerry's policies will.

Also, Kerry wants to give Iran nuclear fuel. how competent is that? Kerry disses our current allies, then claims he will be more diplomatic with allies than Bush, and he doesn't seem to be aware of the contradiction. How competent is that?

And how competent is Kerry in general? He's a kept man who has a half-time hobby of playing at being a US Senator. At least Bush was in business for some years before running for office. Has Kerry actually ever worked for a living his entire life?

I won't even start on his demagoguery about outsourcing.
