No bias here, nope, nothing to see, move along

So now you know what filter you need to parse any kind of news and editorial content from Slate, right? Do you expect the rest of the mainstream media to be any different? Always triangulate, say I.

I'm not going to comment on the Christopher Hitchens entry, other than to note that coyness does not become him. The only other writers on that list I respect are Paul Berman and Phil Carter. I am not surprised by either vote. Berman, for all his hawkish agonizing over the dementia of the antiwar Left, is still a man of the Left. Carter has been trending steadily Dem-ward for the last year on his own blog, I think mostly fueled by military justice and funding issues. I generally respect his legal military analyses, although he knows better than to put forth cliches like "When you mislead the country about our reasons for war in Iraq. . . " C'mon, Phil. You read the same Bush speeches I did. You can be disturbed by Abu Ghraib and homeland security holes without drinking the moveon.org Koolaid.

As i pointed out in my critique of the Oxblog endorsements, all these votes for Kerry assume that his negative qualities pale besides Bush's negative qualities. The equation simply doesn't add up that way to me. The only way to get there is to hold Bush to superhuman standards (as in what kind of shape Iraq "ought" to be right now, ignoring the slow painful progress of the last century's most humanely attempted wars and occupations), buy the media spin about his certitude or fundamentalism or stupidity, or project qualities and beliefs onto Kerry that the man simply doesn't have and ignore the debts he will have to pay once he takes office.

UPDATE: Tim Blair explains the Hitchens flip-flop for those of us who are irony-impaired.
