About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Iraq snapshots

A moving tribute to our troops.

I saw Rabbi Irving Elson speak at JTS a few weeks ago. It was a small audience but a very respectful one. No moonbat comments. He spoke with great feeling for his soldiers in Iraq, and I could tell that they were blessed to have him as their chaplain.

Is it real or is it Memorex? Our troops in Fallujah had many sophisticated psyops methods to discombobulate the enemy, among them loudly playing the theme song from "Team America" from loudspeakers. Fuck, yeah.

Another bloggish kerfluffle about Jewish power, ho hum

I'm going to reproduce this entire post since Steven is going to close Protocols soon and I'm not sure he's going to leave the archives up. Steven emails Juan Cole, who claims that MEMRI operates with a budget of $60 million (as well as accusing them of being the latest incarnation of the Int'l Zionist Conspiracy):

Antisemitism watch

According to FBI statistics, anti-Jewish actions are the majority of religious hate crimes in the US.
The 166-page report documented more than 1,300 religion-based hate incidents in 2003. Jews were by far the most frequent targets of such attacks, with anti-Muslim incidents trailing far behind at 149. That was about the same number of anti-Islamic incidents as the previous year, though it was far fewer than the number of such crimes committed in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

. . . Overall, the report found that hate crimes remained relatively steady between 2002 and 2003. The 7,489 total incidents last year were just 27 more than took place in 2002, the FBI said and the 2002 figures were the lowest since 1994.

A Palestinian art exhibit stirs controversy, since much of the art is the same warmed-over blood libel and related propaganda.

Should Bush have entrusted his security to a host country?

Two views of the Chilean incident.

UPDATE: I expected some spin to the effect that Bush's USSS guys insisting on protecting their president their own way is one more example of American heavy-handed insensitivity, and calling Bush's response "violent." I was not disappointed:

Fighting antisemitism in ultraviolet America

Leftist antisemitism in Europe may be growing without much public protest, but in the US we are doing a pretty good job of confronting it, even in the bluest of blue communities, now that more of us have woken up. (I remember reading an editorial in Moment in 2001, pleading for Jewish organizations and parents to recognize the antisemitism on college campuses and help the Jewish students take a stand.)

For example, a group tried to sneak a divestment resolution past the Board of Aldermen of Somerville, an extremely liberal suburb of Boston. But there are a fair number of Jews in Somerville, and even lefty Ivy League post-graduate Jews tend to balk at divesting from Israel.

Blog roundup

Spoons live-blogged from the National Review pundit cruise in the Carribean. Start here and click back.

Sharp as a Marble enriches the blogosphere with the new science of Indeedology:

. . . These phrases, called heh-metrics, can consist of anywhere between one and four words: Heh, Indeed, Update (also More Here:), and Read the Whole Thing. The study of hehmetrical impact on blog popularity is called Indeedeology. . . . In order to facilitate this study, I have created the Glenndex. The Glenndex monitors hehmetrics by sampling the number of Hehs, Indeeds, Updates, and Read the Whole Things listed on Instapundit. Because of the statistical nature of hehmetrics, there will be several Glenndexes needed to accurately portray hemetrical roles in hit counts.

Deranged journalist Dept.

We knew Robert Fisk has lost it, several times. Each time we wonder how low he can go. Here is his latest example of descending into madness in a vain attempt to make the bad guys and good guys line up the way they are supposed to in Fiskworld (TM).

It's an epidemic!

How low can Chris Matthews go?

PC run amok Dept.

Actually, this is an example of anti-PC run amok, which is the same thing.

The indignant author of this article apparently doesn't know that CE and BCE have been standard usage in historical and archeological circles for over a century. What's more, it has been routine usage in Jewish articles and history books for decades, including those by the Orthodox Jews who voted for Bush and support his domestic and foreign policy, and have no more use for political correctness than Mr. Duke.

This usage may be a revelation to Mr. Duke, but let him rest assured it is not some new PC academic fashion designed to appease Islamists. Maybe he should talk to some bibical archeologists or professors of ancient history before he gets so upset.

Should I say or should I go now?

As violence against Jews increases in Europe, Alisa asks the question. My family faced this same question in the late 1930s: my father (and his family) in Berlin, my mother (and her mother) in Vienna, and in the early 1930s, my uncle's wife-to-be and her family. All of them made the correct choice, which is why I am here today. But it is a difficult complicated wrenching choice.
