A lazy Wednesday evening election mop-up

Karol says:
Young people don't vote. They have never voted. They will never vote. Even when you threaten them with death. Even when Eminem makes a 'cool' video about it. Even when they're lied to and told that they'll get drafted. Counting on the young vote (or, really, 'new' voters of any age) is just about the worst strategy for any campaign.
How about all these Kenyon College students standing for hours in the rain last night?
Despite the seven- to nine-hour wait, spirits remained high among the voters, predominately Kenyon students, many of whom were voting for the first time. At 10 p.m., student Ben Taylor let out a cheer after casting his ballot, excited to be voting in his first election and because the wait was over. He had been in line since 1 p.m. . . . To pass the time, some voters read, many studied, and others did crossword puzzles or played cards. But the majority of the predominately young crowd simply enjoyed the camaraderie of participating in the democratic process. And they will certainly have a story to tell their grandchildren.
I think what Karol means is that there is no youth voting block. The whole premise of the youth vote (interchangeable with the invisible-to-pollsters "cell phone vote") is that this block would overwhelmingly vote Democrat. There is no evidence that this would be the case.

Jay Cost is really disgusted at the media partisanship when it looked like Bush was going to win. They called states for Kerry with a smaller margin than states for Bush with a larger one.
(Jay's post-election analysis begins here. I think he's dead-on about Hillary; unlike the moonbats in my camp, I never could see a majority of the country electing her to national office. Whether or not the Dems give her the nomination will depend on how self-destructive they are at that point.)

Some pundits are speculating that initiatives against gay marriage sealed the deal for Bush, but I can't help but think the "former Gore voter" constituency had some effect. Michael Totten thinks so too. A subset of that constituency, Jewish liberals for Bush, did not increase our numbers as much as I hoped:

Bush won 19% and Gore 80% of the Jewish vote in 2000, according to exit polling. An AJC survey of American Jewish voters in September found 69% would support Kerry and 24% Bush. AJC's Tuesday results suggested slightly stronger gains for Bush in the community. Harris said that nearly all voters who switched from Gore to Bush "identified either Israel or terrorism (and) 9/11 as the first reason for their decision."
(I mentioned anti-Bush lamenting and tearing of garments in my last entry; well, us Jews are virtuosos in this department.)

Here's a roundup of pompous world leader statements on the election.

An election-driven eBay auction - act now! (And check out the bidders' questions.)

UPDATE: County map of election results. If water were red and land were blue, this map would look like the Pacific Ocean.

UPDATE: More seething.

More college-agers than usual voted. Ditto single mothers, blue-collar workers, white-collar workers... more of all types.

Next time someone refers to the President as a religious nut, ask "Did you vote for Carter?".

The debt thing has been known for months, neither party (or even the MSM) wanted to be the first to touch that hot potato for fear of ending up with it. It's a problem, but one that goes with what has been going on the past few years. To put it in perspective, look at France's performance over the last four years - and Chirac does not have Schroeder's excuse of inheriting the mess that was East Germany.

Hm, does that make me a moonbat?

I'm beginning to trust Jay Cost more than my instincts, though.
