Ding dong Part II

(Part I here.)

Yassir Arafat: 1929-2004, the bio.

Jacques Chirac hails Arafat as man of courage. Kofi Annan is deeply moved. Guys, that kind of tactless simplistic talk will create enemies and alienate potential allies. You want to be nuanced, like this:

The death of Yasser Arafat is a significant moment in Palestinian history. We express our condolences to the Palestinian people. For the Palestinian people, we hope that the future will bring peace and the fulfillment of their aspirations for an independent, democratic Palestine that is at peace with its neighbors. During the period of transition that is ahead, we urge all in the region and throughout the world to join in helping make progress toward these goals and toward the ultimate goal of peace.
Palestinian factions call for self-control after Arafat. Good luck. Maybe if they are preoccupied with following the money they won't have time to kill each other.

Someone finally did the parody of the Monty Python "Dead Parrot" sketch that was begging to be done.

Oxblogger Patrick Belton:

Personally (and speaking as a genuine supporter of Palestinian national aspirations and all liberal democratic reformers in that land), I think he should have been declared brain dead four years ago when he walked away from viable Palestinian statehood at Camp David.
UPDATE: Stale memes R' us.

What does Jewish law say about being happy when your enemies die? As you might expect, there are many opinions.

UPDATE: A list of Arafat's terrorist atrocities, 1965 - 2004. That's thirty-nine years of terrorism, folks.

Scott makes a good point about how Palestinians are reacting to their leader's death.

Meryl has a nice link roundup, including more disgusting world leader eulogies.

UPDATE: Tombstone suggestions for Yassir.

Saddam's old pal George Galloway rushed to Yassir's bedside, but it was too late. Says George:

'He is very ill and I have no doubt that the fact Israel kept him trapped under house arrest in a damp cold room for so long has been a big factor in his deterioration.
I thought the climate on the West Bank was usually pretty warm. Maybe Yassir just needed to turn down the A/C.

Bill Clinton will not be attending the funeral.

"The PLO Killed My Cousin." One of the many Americans killed by Arafat's gangs. This murder dates from 1978.

UPDATE: More on the halacha of rejoicing at Arafat's death.
