I was skeptical about the outraged charge that Rumsfeld doesn't personally sign autographs, er, I mean condolence letters. Why should he? Although his job involves overseeing the military, he's not in the direct chain of command to wounded or dead soldiers. He's the Secretary of Defense, a very high-level position. Signing condolence letters seems like a really picayune thing to expect the SofD to spend his time doing. I mean, it would be a thoughful gesture, but the critics act like it's a required part of his job that he is shirking, and that just goes to show what a heartless monster he is.

But what the troops and their families think is more important, and that I didn't know.

But now I do, thanks to Powerline and the Corner and Instapundit, who are getting mail.
Reports from Rumsfeld's Christmas visit to Iraq.
Another report from Rumsfeld in Iraq, with photos.

"Gotcha" doesn't work anymore.

Powerline fisks Sullivan.

With friends like these . . . .

I could not possibly agree with you more. I'm no fan of Rumsfeld. I believe it's a toss-up as to whether he, or George Bush, has been more harmful to the world (not just the United States).

But particularly when you consider the long-term plans of the Bush Administration, you have to realize he cannot possibly sign all these letters. As they send more and more American sons and daughters into harms' way, he'll be left with nothing to do but sign letters all day.

Hmmm...waitaminute....

Hey let's look on the bright side of all these casualties. If they rise sufficiently, all that Rumsfeld will have time to do is sign the condolence letters. Let's see, at the rate we are going, by 2008 we'll have 5,000 deaths and thousands more wounded, psychologically disabled, and so on....
