Interpreting Sontag
Josh Trevino has written the blogosphere's only graceful and sensible reflections on Susan Sontag. Thank you, Josh, for resisting the easy hits (which are also deserved).UPDATE: Josh also methodically takes apart the "US is stingy with foreign aid" meme. Unsurprisingly, Brat of the Blogosphere Daily Kos jumped on that bandwagon, and Josh takes him apart too. Jeff and a few commenters pile on.
UPDATE: A similar assessment from Glen Wishard.
UPDATE: This bothered me too:
I have to say I'm amazed at the fact that almost all the obituaries for Susan Sontag omitted her primary, 20 year relationship with Annie Liebovitz, the photographer. Of 315 articles in Nexis, only 29 mention Liebovitz, and most of them referred merely to their joint projects. Liebovitz was unmentioned as a survivor in the NYT and Washington Post. It's striking how even allegedly liberal outlets routinely excise the homosexual dimension from many people's lives - even from someone dead.

I'm glad to see from Trevino's essay that I'm not the only one who feels that way. The world could use a few more Sontags. Her intellectual vices were common, but her virtues were rare.
