More Free Muslims Against Terrorism
Previous entries on the Muslims Against Terrorism rally in Washington DC here, here, and here.Oleg Atbashian, founder of Communists for Kerry and the People's Cube, has a link-rich report on the Muslims Against Terrorism rally in Washington DC last week, with more photos. He also has links to two videos: a short one from the Washington Post site, with "man in the street" interviews, and streaming video of the entire rally (courtesy of C-SPAN). I don't know how long that will be available, so budget some time to view it soon. The speeches are really inspiring. I defy anyone to watch these speeches and remain cynical about the intentions of this organization.
You can also be cynical about the amount of influence FMAT will have, given the sparse attendance at the rally. But you can make a difference. Maybe only 50 people attended the rally, but you can expose thousands more to this movement by telling people about the video. It's a lot easier to watch a video on the privacy of your own computer - anywhere in the world! - than to attend a rally, in a particular city, especially when your leaders have told you not to.
This video can have legs. It can change minds. Send the link to all your Muslim friends.

Eyeless in Gaza
I got to see Ariel Sharon speak this afternoon in NYC. This is a pretty good description of the event. What the report doesn't tell you is that Sharon opened his speech by saying "I came here this morning from Jerusalem, which is the eternal and undivided capital of Israel."
He also said, "In Judea and Samaria, the major Jewish population centers will remain as they are, and there will be no return to the 1967 borders." I spoke to some of the protestors afterwards, and I'll write more about it tomorrow.
UPDATE: Here's the NYTimes report. A quibble: the protestors were on the opposite corner, not in front of the doors. This was an accurately described fun moment:

Personal Democracy
There was an all-day seminar in political blogging here in NYC yesterday. Despite repeated offers of discounts, I didn't go, because my experience of such things is that they aren't worth the money unless your goal is intense networking (especially if you can hear the presentations later). Networking is a worthy purpose, but not my top priority right now.Karol liveblogged it:

Antisemitism watch
Previous entry in this unfortunate series here. Latest on the AUT boycott here. Latest on the Protestant divestment movement here. Latest on the Columbia U Middle East studies professors here.At a lecture last week, I met a young neocon graduate student in library sciences, who confirmed for me the overwhelmingly "progressive" bias of the profession. American librarians were slow to support their dissident amateur members in Cuba, since the wonderfulness of Castro trumps the right to read what you want. Now I find out that our librarians aggressively promote a particular point of view on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Here's a great example of how you can employ pseudo-spiritual psychobabble without having the slightest idea of what you are talking about, and profess to be improving your compassion and forgiveness while engaging in the harshest unexamined stereotypes about other people.

I want my MTV, er, NPR
More oppression of free speech from the fascist Bushitler:Last month, the corporation's board, which is dominated by Republicans named by President Bush, told the staff at a meeting that it should prepare to redirect the relatively modest number of grants available for radio programs away from national news, officials at the corporation and NPR said. "We heard sentiments from the board that they are interested in support of more music," said Vincent Curran, a senior vice president in charge of the radio division.I think the board is being a bit heavy-handed. Why not let NPR be a carefully-protected preserve for hothouse leftism? Certainly this particular political animal is finding it harder to survive in the wild.

Liberal hawks update
Just like some bloggers have blogchildren, my NYC Metro Liberal Hawks Yahoo group has spawned one offspring, in Portland ORE. I am proud to report that the group just had its second social gathering. What is a Liberal Hawk? Well, all sociopolitical movements have very loose definitions (otherwise you can't entertain yourself with internecine fighting and endless splinter groups), but here's one pass at it.)

Fifty Muslims and friends against terrorism
I left for the "Free Muslims Against Terrorism" rally at 6:30 AM yesterday to take the subway to meet my ride to Washington DC. I got back from the rally about 3 AM, after a long dinner and drinks with some of the organizers and bloggers and friends, a late departure from DC, and another subway ride at the other end. While I slept in and was otherwise lazy today, everyone else in the blogosphere reported on the rally, including many people who weren't there. (So thanks everyone for doing the hard work and letting me link to you.)Continue reading "Fifty Muslims and friends against terrorism"

Here's to hirsuteness
Sullivan and readers have been talking about the current fad - which crosses all genders and sexual orientations - for hair removal. I personally find this fad repulsive. I haven't seen as many naked guys lately as I would like, but to whatever extent I have been exposed to the hairless pubes look, it grosses me out. If I wanted to lech on smooth hairless boys, I would be a pedophile. Men have pubic hair, pre-pubescent boys don't. Women have pubic hair, pre-pubescent girls don't. Any guy who would be turned off because I don't shave down there is going to be politely shown the door.Continue reading "Here's to hirsuteness"

Not Now Not Ever
Mary has a short report on the rally in Central Park on Sunday against the genocide in the Sudan. It got a respectable crowd, considering that it took place on Mother's Day. The rally was generated by a group of students at Yeshiva University, and there were many references to Jewish values from the podium and many kippot and tzitzit in the crowd. (Of course, the so-called social justice groups that staged the May Day rally in Union Square were nowhere to be seen.)I guess this is the kind of thing that "Gandhi" and his friends find extremely suspect. I mean, why would Jews want to make a big deal about some genocide in Africa, hmmmmm? Well, "Gandhi" is part of the Juan Cole fan club, and Juan has the answer (scroll down past the first two quotes). Of course, if Jews ignored any of these human rights tragedies, we would be accused of only caring about our own (which we are routinely accused of anyway, in spite of mounds of evidence to the contrary). When we do speak out against oppression, we are accused of having ulterior motives.
