From little acorns . . .
Last month, after I got back from the Free Muslims Against Terrorism rally in Washington DC, I tried to counter the disappointment and cynicism over the low turnout, that was welling up from some parts of the blogosphere. The speeches were electrifying condemnations of suicide bombing, Wahabi imperialism, fundamentalism, and leftist victim-mongering (you can watch the complete streaming video here). I said:You can also be cynical about the amount of influence FMAT will have, given the sparse attendance at the rally. But you can make a difference. Maybe only 50 people attended the rally, but you can expose thousands more to this movement by telling people about the video. It's a lot easier to watch a video on the privacy of your own computer - anywhere in the world! - than to attend a rally, in a particular city, especially when your leaders have told you not to.A bit belatedly, I just found out that FMAT founder Kamal Nawash was named by Condoleeza Rice to be part of the US delegation to the Conference on Anti-Semitism and on Other Forms of Intolerance in Cordoba, Spain, which took place last week. This video can have legs. It can change minds. Send the link to all your Muslim friends.
(Here is Nawash's statement during the session on discrimination against Muslims. One could claim that he was chosen for the delegation because he would be sure to praise Bush's treatment of Muslims; however, everything in the statement is true.)
There are several 800 lb. elephants in the world of American Muslim lobbying, but Rice picked Nawash as the only Muslim member of a small select delegation. We know some of Bush's staff read blogs and I'm sure they watch C-SPAN too. Think about it.
(Unfortunately, the results of the conference were nothing to write home about.)
