Revealing Conversation
A friend emailed this to me (names are not named to protect friendships and livelihoods):
I had a brief but fascinating discussion at the local diner today with the wife of my congressman, who is reliably one of the most far-left in the nation.
We were exchanging pleasantries about our sons, and I mentioned that mine is overseas, feeling frustrated he can't do more to help in New Orleans. I told her I'd advised him to make a donation right away and look for volunteer opportunities when he comes home.
As soon as I said "make a donation" she grew visibly incensed. "That's what we pay taxes for!" she burst out with unmistakable vehemence. She repeated this several time. Apparently, in her view, it's an affront for private citizens to respond to their fellow Americans' urgent needs because the government should be all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-powerful via our magical tax revenue.
While my congressman's wife grows red-faced at the thought of donating money to desperate people, tens of thousands of ordinary Americans are organizing to help every way they possibly can.
Sheesh.
