The final seal
The culmination of all our rain-making perambulations took place this morning, and the 5766 Book of Life has been signed, sealed, and delivered . . . but wait! It's not over yet! Tomorrow we get to pray for rain again.
This year's sukkot was a bit subdued with the cold and rain of a very late holiday season. I skipped two sukkah parties. We are going to have to bundle up for the customary Upper West Side Simchat Torah blowout. Each year I plan to read an English translation of the piyyutim used in the hakafot, and each year I don't get around to it. Like Tashlich, beating the willows has mysterious origins and multiple meanings, but probably persisted as a folk custom the rabbis eventually had to accept because the physical metaphor is so obvious and satisfying.
This photo from Adloyada's daughter suggests what Sukkot was like in the days of the Temple:
. . . This would have been around dawn. She got up at 4am to be able to get the right place from which to photograph the awesome sight of the entire huge Western Wall plaza and all the surrounding rooftops crowded with worshippers holding their arba minim . . .:

Sukkot? Simchat Torah? Are these related to Sukkos and Simchas Torah repsectively?
