Armadillo
Jeff Goldstein, out there in snow country, has to create invisible armadillo friends. But in Texas we have real armadillos, and I thought I wasn't going to see one my entire vacation, although deer were ambling all over people's lawns in broad daylight.
I finally saw one of those prehistoric little guys on the Willow City scenic loop drive on the last day of my trip. He ambled out of the brush on the side of the road, because armadillos are genetically compelled to become roadkill whenever they have an opportunity. But since I was enjoying the scenery and only going 15 miles an hour, I stopped and watched him waddle around. They don't see too well.
