About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Four years of evolution

cakecloseup.jpg

Kesher Talk was four years old on Saturday.

Kesher Talk was probably the first political blog with a specifically Jewish character, and the first Jewish neo-con blog. It was launched on December 10th, 2001, by Howard Fienberg. I joined the team in August of 2002, the Mesozoic Era of the political blogosphere, but Kesher Talk emerged in the Paleozoic, while the shock of 9-11 was still fresh. (I would say the Precambrian stretches out before 9-11 into the mists of the Archeon Eon of the blissfully optimistic dot.com era.)

I contributed longer, often contentious, essays (some of which are linked in the "Best of KT" on the left sidebar), while Howard concentrated on Instapundit-type news links and a series, "Jews in Odd Places." I collected a roundup of what I considered highlights from my first year.

In 2004, increased job responsibilities forced Howard to disengage from the blog, and I became its de facto owner. Since then Kesher Talk has added another regular blogger, and upgraded to its own domain name, a fancier layout, and ads. The Jewish blogosphere has grown enormously, even hosting its own annual awards. When we first hosted the Carnival of the Vanities, it was the only Blog Carnival around. Now there are carnivals for every topic imaginable. (We also pioneered the allusion to the well-known first verse of Kohelet, which later was independently conceived of for the Jewish Blog Carnival: Havel Havelim.)

This year we signed on at the lower tier of Pajamas Media, and look forward with interest to the further evolution of the blogosphere.
