IDF Diary - Week 1, Day 5

Today is Thursday. The weekend starts this afternoon for us. We leave work a bit early in the afternoon, and at 4:00 there are a few vans to take us to a bus or taxi stop, or to our destination if it's nearby. As army volunteers, we are entitled to use the soldiers' hostels around the country for a small fee. These usually dorm style hostels are free of charge for soldiers on leave. In Yaffo, near Tel Aviv, there is a hostel where volunteers can stay for free.

The Sar-El program coordinators in Israel offer weekend tours as an option, for a reasonable fee. Two Sar-El volunteers from my base are renting a car together to tour the country, two are going to Jerusalem, four plan to visit a health spa in nearby Tiberias, four are going to the hostel in Yaffo, and I think the rest, like me, plan to visit friends or relatives.
Johanna and Michal, our madrihhot, asked us all our plans for the weekend yesterday, and have given each of us detailed information on how to there and back from the base. We're all sorry to learn that Johanna is leaving: she is such a cheerful dynamo. She's going to be in the south next week on an Force base with a group of volunteers from Peru. The Air Force is considered to be elite compared to army. As I daydream about how good the food will be and the sharp beige uniform I'll get to wear if on my next Sar-El stint if I get to work on an Air Force base, I realize that I may be turning into a newly minted Sar-El addict, even if I still can't explain exactly why.
