IDF Diary - Week 2, Day 1

Rona and Mark volunteered for two weeks with Sar-El in Israel, assisting the IDF. Kesher Talk is publishing Rona's diary. All photos posted here are copyrighted by Mark Kempton.

You can view the whole series in the "Good News From Israel" category; look for "IDF Diary" in the title.

Got back to the base in the nick of time for lunch. A woman named Mor joined us today to replace Johanna. After getting a fresh uniform, I went to work for a couple of hours this afternoon. This week we will get a full day off work for a tour somewhere in the local area, and I'm only staying on the base for two weeks, so I really wanted to put in at least a bit of extra time working today, but my warehouse supervisor sent me off, saying "leat, leat" (slowly, slowly,) so I spent a very pleasant afternoon hearing about the others' weekend travels.

After dinner, a soldier named Eldad presented an evening program about some highlights of Jewish history in Israel from the construction of the First Temple (636 B.C.?) through 1948. Although he's only 19 years old, this guy knows a lot and the discussion had depth. His mother is a historian, and his grandfather wrote text books used by Israeli public school history classes. I think it's quite safe to generalize and say that the average young Israeli is a good deal more mature than a typical American of the same age.
