About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Merry Christmas

Oh. There's some holiday starting tonight, isn't there?

This is such a diverse country. It's great, isn't it? Every week some ethnic group is having a holiday. (When is Ramadan this year, anyway?) One of ours starts tomorrow night. One of its main themes is the refusal to be assimilated into a majority culture. (A great explication of the historic background of this struggle, and a beautiful interpetation of its meaning. Except for the picture of Ariel Sharon and the last paragraph, which are gratuitous bits of editorializing.)

But more of that later. For now, I wish all my Christian friends a very merry Christmas, especially our troops serving in war zones. And here are my Christmas CD recommendations (which I should have posted a few weeks ago, but you can still download them from iTunes):

The McGarrigle Christmas Hour, Kate and Anna McGarrigle
We Three Kings, the Roches
Frost and Fire, the Watersons
The Holly Bears the Crown, the Young Tradition with Shirley and Dolly Collins
