Okay, I see more cluepons are needed
Any blogger with an interest in foreign policy who completely ignores the the Iraqi elections or sneers at them because their success challenges your agenda, needs to get a clue. So feel free to copy the cluepon from the previous post. Don't spend it all at once. Make it last.
Here's a hint:
. . . The most salient political fact in Iraq this year is that the Sunnis, who boycotted the elections in January, appear to have voted heavily in today's election. That is significant because it demonstrates what the Iraqis themselves -- including the Sunnis -- consider to be the trajectory of events. Sunnis did not vote in large numbers today simply because they have fallen in love with the concept of liberty, though we should never underestimate its appeal. The Sunnis also voted in large numbers today because they believe, unlike in January, that the way to advance their interests in the new Iraq is through democracy and constitutionalism. They have thrown their hat over the wall of democracy. This is a remarkable political achievement in a remarkable political year in the Middle East.. . . Iraqis are saying they believe the future of Iraq is with the ballot instead of the bullet. They are embracing political debate instead of a culture of death.
