Iraqis marching in the streets
Looks like the Iraqis are starting their own Orange Revolution. (Green Revoluton?)
Like I said, the Fat Lady hasn't stepped up to the mike yet. The pessemists need to stop being so gleeful and have a little faith.
Iraq the Model has details, including a video of the demonstrations. He makes it clear that this is a coalition of many parties, secular and religious. It isn't just disgruntled Sunnis who want to regain their former power. However, the disgruntled Sunnis are a little paranoid that they were tricked by the election commission, and badly need to see that guns aren't the answer after all. Marching in the streets is preferable to armed insurgency.
Those parties and coalitions-more than 30 in total-signed a “charter of honor” and formed a new movement under the name “Maram”. The main parties involved in Maram are the Accord Front, Allawi’s list, Salih al-Mutlaq and the list of former defense minister Hazim al-Sha’lan as well as many other Sunni and secular Shia smaller lists and parties that collectively represent more than 70 seats in the parliament according the currently announced results.Apparently there is some Coalition muscle behind the inquiries into the election process, and some arrests have been made. My guess is the Coalition would not want to be seen as interfering in a nation's political process unless there was some compelling reason, and the reason in this case would be Iranian involvement.. . . . This joint effort between Sunni Islamists, Sunni and Shia seculars as well as communists in spite of the great differences in their points of view reflects the depth of the worries shared by those parties about having one party monopolize power.
