Purple solidarity
Iraqis in hospitals or the military started voting yesteray, with the rest of the electorate following on Thursday. This is the third time the Iraqis have gone to the polls in huge numbers, braving snipers and suicide bombers and manipulation by neighboring regimes. So far they have confounded the dire (and racist) predictions that they would elect extremist imams or a Baathist strong man, or dissolve into warring tribal clans. Even the BBC reluctantly acknowledges that Iraqis are very optimistic about their future, although what is ostensibly a news report about the poll tries to wring as much pessimism from the results as it can.

We tried to take a picture of the two of us together in my bathroom mirror, but it didn't come out too good.
UPDATE: An Iraqi voter tells it like it is.
