An Arab Tribute to Sharon

"Courage and objectivity require us to admit that Ariel Sharon has lived all his life for his people's benefit," a commentary in Jordan's al-Dustur reads.
"If he were an Arab leader and behaved as he has done in Israel, he would have been the idol of the masses from the Atlantic to the Gulf."
The last line in an article from the BBC reporting on the reporting of Sharon's grave situation in the Arab Press.
[From Judith: I saw another one on CNN today, while at the gym. Paraphrasing: "He was a hero to his people because he never killed his own people. Show me one Arab leader who hasn't massacred his own people. We Arabs would be happy if we had a leader like Sharon." (This was a quote from a Muslim in Europe.) Wow. In that world, to be a hero it's enough to not massacre your own people. How many centuries has it been since a Jewish leader massacred other Jews? ]

1,935 years I expect. A certain amount of that went on during the Roman siege of Jerusalem.

Not to mention Shimon Bar Kochba's rather cruel approach to dealing with segments of the population who did not want to support his rebellion. Which ended in 135 CE.
And of course, prior to that, as we were all discussing a few weeks ago, we had the Maccabees. And we lionize them still and give them a holiday to boot.
