About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

The Clinton years in reverse

It's the time of year for predictions, and a friend emailed hers to me:

1) The United States and/or Israel will stage military attacks on Iran and Syria, including, but not necessarily limited to, aerial bombardments. The base-line goal will be to set back by years Iran's ability to launch nuclear assaults, but once the military offensive is underway, much higher goals of toppling regimes may be attempted and possibly reached.

2) The Democrats will wage a concerted effort to impeach the President. Using the charge of illegal wiretapping and other “civil liberties” concerns, they will dramatically join forces, helped by their media friends, to try to drive him out of office and put him in jail. Although the exact timing of these things is difficult to calibrate, the Democrats will attempt to have their impeachment process coincide with the American war on Iran, in order to more effectively distract from, stop and undermine the war. They will not succeed.

So far, my predictions on political events (such as who will win the Presidency) have been right. Stay tuned.

That's true! However, she also predicted that John Kerry would have a nervous breakdown and drop out of the race. Well, I hope #1 comes true and #2 doesn't get started.

Funny, Clinton was also prosecuting a war while threatened with impeachment, a war against terrorism and for democracy. I think it's safe to predict that Bush will emerge from both challenges in much better shape than Clinton. Iraq has a chance to continue to develop a civil society instead of devolving into the sporadic civil war that plagues the Balkans, because Bush got to learn from Clinton's mistakes.

As for impeachment, I don't see that effort even getting off the ground. Since 9-11 this country has been grappling with the trade-offs between liberty and safety, and the NSA activities are the latest battleground. It's a complex problem: how do you maintain civil liberties when your enemy takes advantage of your openess? But the Dems have to explain why outing Valerie Plame is bad and outing the NSA is good. I just think they're going to spin their wheels.
