Islamic PR in Detroit

From our roving correspondent in Detroit, Alex Bensky:

The combined Saturday edition of the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press (or, as I like to think of it, the Press Free of News; they're both embarrassingly bad papers) has a rotating column from various local clergy. Usually the columns are anodyne, explaining about holidays, urging people to be nice, that sort of thing. Imam Elahi, I would guess, was selected as a moderate and comparatively uncontroversial representative from our local Moslem community.

The good imam has referred to Yassir Arafat as a man of peace whose tragedy was that no one on the other side was willing to make peace with him.

He called Sheik Yassin a man "overflowing with the love of humanity." Sheik Yassin, of course, was a founder and spiritual leader of Hamas, whose charter in several places calls for killing Jews as Jews, not bothering with the pretended distinction between Jews and "Zionists." By the way, Hamas's charter also blames Jews for everything from the world wars to the Rotary Club, and no, I haven't the vaguest idea why they see Rotary as a Zionist plot.

Then yesterday he had this.

Note the first sentence of the second paragraph. This is a man who I suppose wants to present the Moslem community's best face to the rest of society. I wonder what those who don't write for the mainstream press are thinking, but I rather think I really don't want to know.

I see the esteemed imam uses "Christian crusade" and "democracy" as synonyms. Shesh, next he'll be thinking freedom of speech is the terrorism of the West.
