Lipstadt Changes Her Mind on Israeli Toon Festival
Scholar Deborah Lipsadt has changed her mind about serving as a judge for the Israeli anti-semitic cartoon contest (see Feb. 17 posting for the announcement).
On her blog, "History on Trial," she wrote, somewhat mysteriously, "This is being used by others for wrong purposes. I urge the organizers to cancel the contest."
Meanwhile, organizer boomka.org has set up a gallery for its entries.

A few friendly calls from Sir Iqbal and his crowd?

I thought Lipsadt's explanation anything but "mysterious."

When I first heard the contest announced, I loved the idea as I thought the contributions would actually do a better job of making fun of antisemites and holocaust deniers, but I really think only three of the submissions posted as at Feb. 22, 2:30 pm EST really captured that spirit -- the one of Moses' secret 11th commandment to control the media and the one that has transformed the Mohammed with a bomb in his turban to an Orthodox Jew and one of Hitler in heaven, flanked by Ghandi and Martin Luther King who said if only they knew, they would have gladly given Adolf a hand in exterminating Jews. Some of the others are innocuous at best -- Grant Woods' American Gothic couple done up as Jews, but others are only exercises in being as nasty if not nastier than the bigots. One true thing about bigots is that they lack subtlety and wit. The best way to skewer them is to retain those qualities, rather than roll in the mud with them. As Lincoln said, getting into a fight with a pig is dumb; they love rolling in mud.
