About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

WWIV gets hotter

A Muslim "we are sorry" site, addressed to Denmark and Norway.

It cannot be emphasized enough that this latest round of riots and burning was carefully planned and staged. Just like the "protest" against Ariel Sharon's walk on the Temple Mount. It is a purposeful propaganda campaign, designed to guilt-trip and intimidate.

Some protests are more equal than others.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Juan Cole predictably explains how Muslims get to be more sensitive to insult than everybody else. However, one of his commenters links to Israeli and British political cartoons which demonstrate that Westerners are just as hard on ourselves as we are on others. Ya gotta have a thick skin to live in an open society. Stephen Green says something similar:

They want a culture war? Fine. Let's give them one.

. . . . If you have some free time some weekday afternoon, take a look at what goes on outside a Planned Parenthood clinic when Operation Rescue is there. Hollywood hangs left, talk radio tilts right, and each is expert at making the other look bad. Remember the civil rights movement? Remember the Republican Revolution (even if the Republicans don't)? Left and right, Americans know how to wage a culture war.

It seems we're in one. And as in any war, we can't afford to remain passive. Sun Tzu wrote that when your enemy is angry, annoy him. Is there any doubt the Arab Street is at long last really angry? Then it's time for us to wage an Offensive Offensive. If they're angry, let's really piss them off. Let's show the Arab Street that in a war between our attitude and theirs, we're the Fonz and they're Ralph.

This comment by Tigerhawk implies that the culture war Stephen advocates is really going to be between the advocates of identity politics (of which Islamism is a subset) vs. advocates of equality under the law:
The real reason the left is quiet is that this crisis is a lance at the heart of modern identity politics. It has exposed the stupidity of hate crimes legislation, and made us all aware that our devotion to "tolerance" -- the true god of the Western lefty -- cannot be reconciled with an allegedly victimized group that is itself intolerant. The only solution is surrender, and the left does not want to admit that. So it pretends the story isn't happening. We'll let them know when its over.

UPDATE: List of lefty blogs talking about it.

» A Cole cornucopia from Kesher Talk
Recently Iowahawk gifted us with a Juan Cole edition of his parody skillz, but Prof. Cole has trumped Iowahawk by parodying himself. As we know, Christopher Hitchens' challenge to Cole's understanding of Farsi led to a flame war between the... [Read More]

That's a great point about this being setup just like the outraged response to Sharon's Temple Mount visit. I hope everyone remembers what such outrage can be fanned into, beyond just guilt and intimidation. Great post.

An interesting parallel between the intifadah and the protests. In the case of the intifadah, most people who organized the original protests indicate that things got out of their control, and spiraled into a chaos that even they did not want. I hope that this set of protests do not have the same fate. On Thursday I thought they were dying down, and then they pickd up again Friday. Let's hope, as I originally concluded, that this is more of a warning to the West than an all-out long-term uprising.
