Beware the Southern Front, Part 2: Sen. Cornyn Holds Border Violence Hearing
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Republic of Texas) held a hearing on Wednesday on the topic "Federal Strategies to End Border Violence." It sounds like Cornyn's got a good grasp of the issues and solutions:
The legislation that Senator Kyl and I have introduced tackles this problem on every front. It begins with increasing the numbers of the most valuable asset we have: Border Patrol agents. We also call for the use of physical barriers in high-trafficked areas and the use of up-to-date technology, such as UAVs and sensors. This combined approach controls the border by creating a “virtual fence”. Our legislation also streamlines deportation proceedings, requires foreign countries to do their part in combating illegal entry, and punishes employers who hire illegal aliens.
The hearing mostly got coverage in Southwestern media. Other immigration stories lately didn't even mention it. The NY Times didn't have anything worth reading, but this source is an outstanding substitute for the Times. Great graphics, too.
Earlier KT commentary on this issue is here.
