About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Sudan massacres are nothing new

[ UPDATE: More photos from the Sudan Freedom Walk in the extended entry. ]

I recently pointed several prescient incidents of extremist Muslim terrorism from way before 9-11. Here's another one, in a remembrance of a founder of the neocon movement, Milton Himmelfarb:

In 1967, when Soviet authorities compared Israelis to Nazis, he pointed out that "in their own country they themselves have consistently repressed the truth about what Nazism did to the Jews." A couple of years later, responding to the increasingly vicious anti-Israel rhetoric of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and some of the more militant "black power" activists, he wrote: "Muslim Arabs are systematically murdering black people in Sudan, and Israel is supposed to be the enemy of blacks."
This was the early 1970s, and the massacres of Sudanese by Arab Muslims was already being noted.

And people are still trying to get the world's attention for it. The Sudanese Freedom Walk made its way to Ft Lee, NJ yesterday, and a friend has an account (via email):

The Sudan Freedom Walkers (about 30 people) were warmly welcomed at my synangogue (JCC Ft. Lee) last night after a cold walk from Manhattan. They hoofed it over the George Washington Bridge, and then got lost for about 10 minutes until they found us. We warmed them up with coffee, tea and cake.

Simon Deng's story is truly astonishing. He was sold into slavery @ the age of 8yrs, and was a slave for three years before escaping his Muslim masters. He is ashamed to tell people he was a slave, but he feels he must speak for those in Darfur who have no voice. He started a new life here in America, and now lives in New York. He came to Sudan activism after reading a story in the NY Sun (gotta love that newspaper) about how people were being sold into slavery for $10 U.S. He is truly a noble and courageous person. There were others there from Darfur - mostly Christian, who told their own stories.

A Muslim man from Northern Sudan (now living in New Brunswick) spoke out against the genocide. He is walking as well. Most englightening was when he said his family in Sudan wouldn't understand him being in a synagogue and speaking with Jews; but he has moved beyond the 7th Century mindset and into the modern world.
