Israeli Anti-Semitic Toonfest: And the Winner Is . . .

With Art Spiegelman one of the judges, the Israeli Anti-Semitic Cartoon Contest at boomka.org ended last week with the crowning of a cartoon titled "Fiddler On the Roof," by 24-year old Aron Katz of Los Angeles, as the winner. Katz donated his $600 prize to the groups Rabbis for Human Rights and the American Jewish World Service. Click over to boomka.org to see that winning entry.

Spiegelman and other judges were candid in their comments about the entries. It turns out the quality of Jewish anti-semitic artwork can stand a lot of improvement.

All judges have expressed their dissatisfaction by the quality of the cartoons we received.

Two of them, Art Spiegelman and Amos Biderman, refused to select a winning cartoon. Both stated that they think the idea of the contest itself is great, but the cartoon received as an outcome are disappointing, both in their aesthetic and content aspects.

Art Spiegelman chose the cartoon we created as the contest’s logo as the best cartoon.

Take time to read the comments section accompanying the announcement of the winner, as readers argue over which cartoons were the best. Especially note the long entry from winner Aron Katz, who writes, "Thank you, this really is a dubious honor."
