A confidence-building measure to develop mutual trust so that the peace process can proceed
Lisa Goldman was near the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv today and has a long post about it with photos.
More links from her friend, fellow blogger, and seder host Allison.
Michelle Malkin has the best link roundup, and more photos.
Adloyada notices that the BBC is avoiding quoting the enthusiastic Hamas endorsements of the bombing, in favor of "moderate" statements by Abbas and ilk. Except that they don't run the PA anymore, do they? Even after Hamas has taken off the mask, some work really hard at not looking.
With the caveat that it's too soon to look for any good that could come of this:
Olmert was promising to withdraw from parts of the West Bank, and a bit too precipitously for some people. I don't think Israel should volunteer to give anything away, as a matter of principle. Every withdrawal should be part of some kind of land-swap or reward for specific promises of peaceful behavior. I was worried that Olmert would start withdrawing to show his good intentions or as a result of American pressure, without getting any guarantees in advance.
After today, more of the Israeli public will be less tolerant of generous land giveaways. Olmert will be closely watched to make sure he drives a hard bargain. And I wish it would have been that way without another pigua to remind people to keep their guard up.
