Thus Saith the Lord, "The Children of Israel Shall Rock"
Want to add a little aural l'chaim to those upcoming seders? Then turn your TV to VH1 on April 13, crank the volume up to 11, and enjoy the headbangingly heimishe sounds of "Matzo and Metal II: Back To The Desert." According to VH1,
The second annual Seder set to premiere on the network for classic rock lovers will bring together rock artists - that all happen to be Jewish - for a meal never to be forgotten at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The half-hour special will feature Scott Ian (Anthrax), Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard), Josh Silver (Type O Negative) and VH1 Classic host Lynn Hoffman as they gather for Kosher food and to discuss what rock music and their Jewish heritage have meant to them.
The idea is intriguing, as a way to introduce Judaism to audiences who come for the music and stay for the matzo and Manischewitz. Wouldn't it be inspiring to see Ian, Seinfeld and Silver form a Jewish power trio and hit the road with their own original Jewish music? If Matisyahu can can cause such a stir with his reggae Jewish music, why not Jewish heavy metal?
The program joins the catalog of explicitly Jewish references in entertainment. Another musical example that comes to mind is Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song, which includes the lyrics
When you feel like the only kid in town without a Xmas tree,
Here's a list of people who are Jewish, just like you and me:David Lee Roth lights the menorrah,
So do James Caan, Kirk Douglas, and the late Dinah Shore-ahGuess who eats together at the Karnickey Deli,
Bowzer from Sha-na-na, and Arthur Fonzerrelli.Paul Newman's half Jewish; Goldie Hawns half too,
Put them together--what a fine lookin Jew!
And if you really want to rock the ruach, you just can't do better than this band of rascals.
