Ayaan Hirsi Ali at the NYPL

hirsi-ali.jpg

On Sunday Mary, Jeff and I all met up at the New York Public Library (the main building with the lions out front), found our way through a warren of hallways and levels to an auditorium in the basement, to hear Ayaan Hirsi Ali talk about Islam and women and Europe and liberalism.

I took copious notes and can't find them anywhere and I am afraid I left them at the cafe. But Atlas has posted a NY Sun article about the talk, which describes it very well, from the MC's discomfort with the topic to Gourevitch's inane equivalences to the standing ovation Ali got at the end. Read the whole thing.

I caught hold of the girl in the LGF t-shirt on the way out, and turns out she was with several family members who are on my email list. (You can say what you want about LGF, but as a community-building device it rocks. And everyone I've met through that blog has been a mensch. )

After the talk we had a bite in the cafe in Bryant Park next to the Library.

UPDATE: LGF T-shirt Teen in her own words:

I never post here (though I read quite frequently--LGF is my homepage! And I really should be commenting more often) but I'm very proud to say that I am the "female student wearing a Little Green Footballs T-shirt" mentioned here :)

I'm honestly thrilled that I was able to go hear Ayaan Hirsi Ali speak. As I remarked to my mother, this was the first time I've heard a speaker with whom I agreed on every point. I think she's incredibly inspiring and I wish more people had the opportunity to hear what she has to say. Surprisingly, hardly anyone in the elitist-NYC-liberal circle I go to school with every day knows about her--I told my U.S. Government teacher I went to hear her speak, and not only did he not know who she was, he'd never heard about Theo van Gogh! I think that's all pretty appalling.

. . . . And no, my t-shirt wasn't wet. I'm a respectable pro-Iraq-war-website reader!

You go, girl.

Remarkable that the T-shirt girl's US govt teacher had never heard of Ayaan Hirsi Ali nor even of Theo Van Gogh. These "educators" need to get out more, if only -- especially -- in the blogosphere.

Judith,

You did indeed take copious (and fast!) notes, but I'm pretty certain they were packed away when we left the table. You had to dig for a scrap when I wanted to write extra info on the camera we discussed, so I'm sure that all of your papers were in your bag.

At the NYPL. Is she addressing the UN, too?

Anyone know if her talk has been completely transcribed? Or available as a podcast? Thanks
