As the Temperature Rises . . .

[ From Karol (via Judith), a reminder of how awesome Manhattan can be in the summer. Judith adds: Just avoid Times Square, where you have to fight your way through thickly packed tourists. ]

High in my aerie overlooking midtown Manhattan, I just heard the building public-address system ask the toiling masses to turn off lights in empty office and take other steps to cut electricity consumption. Elevator service is also being cut back after Con Ed sent out an urgent request to building operators.

The national heat wave obviously is beginning to strain the electrical grid, which last conked out in August 2003. Could the same calamity happen again? I don't know, but if it does, I'm semi-ready this time, with an emergency bag here in my office with a change of clothes, three water bottles, and even toothpaste. Plus, I have a memory chip in my digital camera so I can take far more photos than I did in 2003 (when I was trapped in NYC) to document the action on the streets.

Oy.

Well, I also have batteries, flashlights, water.

And a freezer full of food.... but at least my oven is gas, so I can cook the food. Although with no AC I won't want to.
