About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

European antisemitism comes to America

[ UPDATE: More about the perpetrator, who also worked at a nuclear waste facility at one point. His father was actively involved in their Muslim community, the son not so much. So maybe he got all his Israel hatred from Daily Kos. ]

Gateway Pundit is doing the link roundup on the shooting at the Seattle office of the Jewish Federation.

Jews in the US have been shot down before while going about their daily lives, but the perpetrators have been white supremicists. This murderer's confessed motive was: “I’m a Muslim-American. I’m angry at Israel.”

This motive is a recent import to our shores from Europe. Ironically, just today I posted some examples of hostile treatment of Israelis by Europeans, in inappropriate contexts like employment applications. This steady drumbeat of lies and bigoted cliches lays the groundwork for physical violence which erupts later at any Jew, with the excuse of "anger at Israel." Then the bystanders cluck that this isn't antisemitism since "we make a distinction between Judaism and Zionism."

That excuse has been wearing thin for some time now, since most of the victims have not been Israelis, so clearly the perpetrators weren't making that distinction. American Jews as a rule have not been subjected to this relentless barrage of hostility unless they hang out on the Left, whose "anti-Zionism" is that of Europe. The moderate Left has been shrinking and the extremes getting more numerous and more crazed, so they set the tone for the Left in general. The extreme Left excuses Muslim violence against Jews just as the extreme Left in the 60s and 70s encouraged Black violence against whites. In that kind of atmosphere, as in Europe, violence will erupt against individuals going about their daily lives.

Sound Politics wonders if the Seattle "progressive" community will examine its rhetoric.

Sad to say but ANtisemitism has always been here. It is pandemic in Islam.

It's sad but true. Anti-Israel/anti-Jewish sentiments in Europe are growing. It's ironic that the problems come from two sides. On the one hand from extreme right (hatred against the Jewish people) and on the other hand the extreme left (excusing Islamic terrorism). Which one is more dangerous?
Still, there are in Europe still some rational people, who see through the rhetoric of anti-Jewish and anti-Israelian populists!
God Bless!

have you ever gone in europe ? I'm sorry, my english is very poor. I'm french, I'm not antisemit, i think it's very easy to say everybody is against israel politic is antisemit. I just think lebanese, and palestinians have the same right to live in peace. I just think that Tsahal is destroying lebanon, fighting, and killng civilians, in the name of war against terorim. All lebanese are not terorists, child are not terorists, bridges, schools, hospitals are not terorists. Why tsahal bomb lebanon ? Why Tsahal destroy a country ?
And Hezbollah is still alive, not the 4 hundred childs, women and other civilians killed.
For what ? To revenge.
I hope that israelians will be able to live in peace with their History.

jeff,

Hizbollah need only give up the captured soldiers, disarm per UN 1559, and leave the Israelis alone. That will stop the violence.

How hard could it be?

BTW the fact that you ask nothing of Hizbollah is telling. Your anti-Jew bias is showing. No mention of Hizbollah using the Lebanese as human shields.

In fact you are a perfect example of exactly what this article is about.

M. Simon | July 29, 2006 09:58 AM

Jeff, the Israelis are NOT attacking Lebanon for revenge, retaliation and certainly not to hurt people or to control them.

Rather, Hezbollah has amassed a huge arsenal, including as you see rockets and missiles, drones, explosives, mortars, guns of all kinds. It is estimated that the missiles alone number more than 12,000, some can probably strike Tel Aviv. Nearly 2,000 have hit so far, Hebollah has been attacking Israel for years, for no reason, with rockets and killing and kidnapping soldiers.

Hezbollah and Hamas both wish to kill Israel, their philosophy is not to co-exist but to destroy.

500,000 Israelis are living in bomb shelters, crops are dying in the fields, the economy is shot, people and animals are killed and injured by flying ballbearings from weapons that are designed ONLY to hurt and kill the innocent.

The fact that the European press isn't telling THIS story is a big part of the problem with European antiIsrael/antisemitism. It's a vicious circle, creating more hate, resulting in more attacks, and on and on.

With the Palestinians, the conflict goes back to the early 20th century, and there was never really any reason for it. But now, the goal of the elected government is to destroy Israel. So, what can we do?

Again, bigotry and fear have created a terrible situation, hurting everybody.

A grim story.

Gateway Pundit, however, seems the kind of blog one would cross cyberspace to avoid. I realise he isn't to blame for his commenters, but in view of your line

his lack of reaction or reply to the comment that

If anyone practices Islam they are a terrorist, again pure and simple

is revealing. I wonder how he would react if someone replaced "Islam" with "Judaism" in that comment? I bet he would have deleted it.

Oh, and Gateway Pundit is the only blog I've ever visited which appears on its own blogroll. Sweet.

jeff from France...I assume you have studied history. Are you aware that the liberation of France from the Nazis required large-scale military operations which required many civilians? Do you think that France should have been left under German rule to avoid these casualties? Or should the liberation have been done by magical means?

david foster | July 29, 2006 06:12 PM

It's "Off the pigs!" all over again.

Jeremayakovka | July 29, 2006 07:06 PM

Rob, there is some controversy over whether to moderate comments and whose comment thread are most racist and awful.

If a blog has long comment threads I tend to give them a break, especially if others in the comment thread are rebuking the racist one. Did anyone else comment on it in that thread? If not, he should have said something.

Judith | July 29, 2006 08:35 PM

jeff from France...I meant to say "large-scale military operations which required many civilian casualties."

david foster | July 29, 2006 09:20 PM

Judith - it isn't in fact a very long comment thread, and nobody else made any comment whatever on the (anonymously posted) line I quoted (I just went back and checked). No other comments went that far either, but still, as you say, he should have said something.

One to avoid, then.
