About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Tehillim in Texas

In this difficult time for Israel, vacation notes may not be the most fitting blog topic. However, as I find myself in Mission, Texas today looking forward to my 30th high school reunion this weekend, my Jewishness traveled with me.

This Shabbat I'll attend services at Temple Emanuel in McAllen, where my parents were married in 1955 and where I would have had a Jewish education, if I had ever had a Jewish education. I never did, but I still view the Reform shul as my "home" temple. I'll join my fellow Jews here in South Texas to pray Tehillim for the safekeeping of the IDF and the kidnapped soldiers, wise decisions by Israel's leaders, and comfort for the families of those soldiers killed.

Mission! Whoah, I grew up there. Leo Marcell Elementary School. How weird to see mention of one's obscure hometown on the Internet?
