The Senator Goes A-Blogging
Tennessee Senator Bill Frist will be contributing to a blog, medicalmatters.org, started by his leadership committee, VOLPAC. The site describes itself as "a 21st century discussion of health care matters." Frist, a heart and lung transplant surgeon and member of the Princeton Class of 1974, contributed an item today on stem cell research:
I spoke this morning on the Senate floor in favor of increasing – within the strictest of ethical bounds – federal support for stem cell research. My endorsement has been the cause for a great deal of speculation; partisans and pundits have been dissecting my motives. Indeed, some have questioned them.
As I’ve said before, my decision to support this legislation did not come lightly. Nor did it come hastily. I’ve spent years talking with the best scientists and ethicists in the world about this issue. And I stand firmly by my position and my principles. Here is why:
I believe - in my heart - that embryonic stem cells hold UNIQUE potential to heal, and that they can be derived ethically. As a doctor, a father and a senator – as one who truly believes in the power of science and medicine – I simply will not turn my back on the potential to heal.
The site invites doctors, patients, nurses, and other health care professionals to join the discussion. Democrats may even be welcome, although the site doesn't exactly roll out the red-state carpet for them, as its mission statement declares,
Our mission is to promote the GOP’s health care policy priorities and provide a forum to discuss 21st century medical challenges. We will also highlight the failures of the Democrat Party to address these long-term challenges.
Why does the random date "November 2, 2008" dance before my eyes as I read this blog?
