Yet more alternate history news
(Previous dispatch from the alternate Middle East here)
Tuesday, November 6, 2001(Lots of other good stuff at Loud Noises too.)New York, NY (CCN) — The Security Council will meet again today to try brokering a ceasefire in the U.S. war in Afghanistan, as it reaches its first full month.
As fighting will soon enter its fifth week, and the U.S. seemingly unable to militarily complete its mission of disarming Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, several Council members have stepped up their diplomatic efforts to try brokering a deal that will end the bloodshed.
A previous British-French proposal, which was seen as a potential framework for an eventual ceasefire was rejected by the Taliban. The problem seems to center around the U.S. demand, seen by most as unreasonable, that an international force be ready to immediately replace U.S. troops in Afghanistan. In efforts to try finding a speedy resolution, France seems ready to come out in favor of an Al-Qaeda backed resolution that would call for the immediate removal of U.S. troops.
In an impassioned speech before his parliament, Mullah Muhammad Omar decried U.S. atrocities in Afghanistan and demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities. Al-Qaeda has said they will stop ambushing U.S. soldiers if the U.S. agrees to withdraw immediately. Although several countries realize the U.S. has a right to defend itself, many wonder why the U.S. would not stop fighting if Al-Qaeda has agreed to cease their attacks should the U.S. immediately withdraw.
Although the details of a ceasefire remain murky and might be a few weeks off, it is clear to all parties that the U.S. will eventually have to sit down with Al-Qaeda, either directly or indirectly, and find a diplomatic solution to the present conflict.
