Okay, so it's now August 22 . . . .
[ UPDATE: Of course August 22, 2006 has its own blog.
Via PJ Media, really thorough live-blogging. ]
. . . . and Allahpundit says don't take Ahmadinejad's threat seriously or you'll look like a schmuck.
If you want to laugh the whole thing off, the People's Cube has the cultural equivalences figured out, with 'Twas the Night Before Miraj and The Twelfth Imam is Coming to Town.
If you want to worry, the Jerusalem Post has a special section on the Iranian Threat.
Israeli Minister Rafi Eitan says keep the bomb shelters ready just in case, but other Israeli Iran experts don't think Ahmadinejad has anything apocalyptic up his sleeve just yet.
Prof. David Menashri, head of the Center of Iranian Studies at Tel Aviv University, explained that Iran had originally been given a deadline of July 13, later extended to August 31, to respond to the United Nations Security Council demands to suspend enrichment or face the threat of economic and diplomatic sanctions. While some people have pointed with suspicion to Ahmadinejad's selection of August 22 as opposed to the end of August for his declaration, Menashri noted that the day coincides with the beginning of the new month according to the Iranian calendar.Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian analyst who is co-writing a book on Ahmadinejad, acknowledged the Iranian president's messianic convictions, but said the timing of his delivery has more to do with power politics than religion. For starters, Ahmadinejad is constrained by his country's clerics, who have indicated no intention in bringing on Armageddon this week. And the leader himself, according to Javedanfar, doesn't want to be perceived as heading a "maniacal state" a la North Korea. Javedanfar maintained that Ahmadinejad simply wants to better his position on the nuclear issue and world stage - something he wouldn't achieve by attacking Israel in the immediate future.
UPDATE: Yoni says:
Just a reminder that Iran has said that it will give its answer to the world on its nuclear program on August 22.Their is now intelligence that is beyond chatter an Iranian general has told a top Iranian politician that the answer would come in a big flash like lighting. There is also intelligence to suggest that the answer will be delivered in Jerusalem.
According to my source the current intelligence puts Iran holding nukes in 3-6 months.
Israel is taking steps to counter the threat.

I think Rafi Eitan is entirely correct about the bomb shelters - my sense of what I read is that he is speaking about some future threat. Clearly, it would be worth the country's while to invest in bomb shelters in case of some later war - and not just the one that people sense will finish this one off.
I read recently that China was preparing bomb shelters in its capitol for more than 500,000 people. Iran has bomb shelters.
Israel should have more money invested in modernizing the ones it currently has - to prepare for the conflagration down the road.
