"We were drugged by political correctness"
Allison was so moved by this furious op-ed in Ha'aretz that she reposted the entire piece. It's the articulation of the primal scream inside many of us, that has been building since Rosh Hashanah 2000, or even Rosh Hashanah 1993. Go right now and read the whole thing.
It's by the same guy who wrote this.

A spirit of absolute folly

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
-Albert Einstein
Another definition of insanity:
"At the same time, political correctness assumed that Israeli strength is a given. That Israel is insanely strong. Therefore, political correctness disdained any attempt to build and maintain Israeli strength."
Yeah. Israel lost the war because they were too weak. They didn't bomb enough, they didn't have enough planes, helicopters, tanks, troops.
If they sent 150,000 troops maybe then they would be able to defeat a 2000 strong militia.
Olmert's philosophy: "Not working? We need MORE of the same"

Haaretz had an interview with Kuperwasser, the recent intelligence chief. Yes, ideally laser weapons would have been available for the Katyushas. Re: the occupation, all enlightened thinkers have told the Israelis that is the problem including HRH of Jordan yesterday in the same paper and in the Economist this week. The Israelis, while appreciating the melody, will likely not concentrate on the lyrics. I'm not sure there is some grand equation that solves the problem; I await that Jewish Archimedes. For now, muddling through is what Olmert may be maturely up to.

It would be nice to think that the left in Israel would get over itself so decisively and see sense, at least when it comes to existential issues involving Israel, but, like the 9/11 lift, I'm sure this "change in perspective" will turn out to be shortlived for any number of folks. And much of it will return to self-righteous myopia any time now.

However nice it may be to see bullies with egg on their faces, I hope Olmert rides out the post-Lebanon convulsions. I've nothing to say on the article itself except: what is the "1000th percentile"? (Note to Ha'aretz: your journalism is good, but you need a better proof-reader.)

I too linked to Allison's post.
Ari like most Israelis is not facing the real problem:
Socialism.
I bring it up often on Israeli blogs. No one wants to touch it.

terry,
The number of troops you put against a given force is determined by the casualties you are willing to take.
