Ellul 7: Ellul for the whole family

shofar4.jpg Teshuva contemplations every day until Yom Kippur here. You can also find the link on the sidebar under "Yamim Noraim." Rabbi Amy Scheinerman's Ellul guide to teshuvah using Psalm 27 focuses this week on Responsibility. Next week's theme: Regret.

The Diaspora Band rocks out with verse 16 of Ashrei, live:
"Your kingdom is a kingdom spanning all eternities, and Your dominion endures through every generation."
(Thanks to Mara Benjamin for turning me on to these guys.)

Sarah Chandler has some good ideas for bringing a little Ellul into the family. Self-reflections and teshuvah aren't just mysterious things the grownups (or rather, the one who doesn't have child care duties) do in shul for 30 minutes each morning. I really like the interpretation of Moses in the cleft of the rock.

Photo caption: "Shofar envy."

This is the first year I've gone to daily minyan during Elul -- I'm saying kaddish for my father -- and the highlight of shacharit is the blowing of the shofar. There's nothing better to get you in the right frame of mind for the season.

As I've discovered, being third-seat on the shofar, after the rabbi and one other davener, it's actually better to hear the shofar than to blow it. When you blow it, all your brain cells are concentrating on getting the sound to come out right, when they should be focusing on the significance of the blasts.

Attila, I'll have a post on that later - the parable of the shofar blower for the Baal Shem Tov, who screws up his audition?
