Katrina Sweeps Week
Kesher Talk posted profligately during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. So, on the anniversary of that catastrophe, let us remember . . . .
All the reasons why Katrina was a disaster waiting to happen, which could only be partially mitigated by any governmental action.
The beginnings of federal, state and local finger-pointing.
The campaign to point all the fingers at the Bush administration, and numerous debunkings of same.
More finger-pointing and debunkings of same.
Political fallout and more political fallout and malfeasance.
Lies and spin exposed and yet more lies and spin exposed.
Only a small cross-section of the outpouring of relief efforts.
Am I a Pundit Now produced the most memorable graphic, which summed up most of the discussion:
The Euros lapped it up:
The NYTimes tailors its coverage for the European market.
Gorgeous George Galloway, the Oswald Mosely of the Oughts, opportunistically drags Katrina into his debate with Christopher Hitchens.
Jane Galt fisks a Euroweenie mountain of anti-American cliches.
Tony Blair calls out the BBC.
The Economist slaps down Texans, for some reason.'
Someone on the Lucinda Williams forum: "A lot of the locations of her songs are now underwater . . . "
And, since this is a Jewish blog . . . a consideration of the "bathroom brocha" as a microcosm of the physical infrastructure of our civilization, the Jews of New Orleans and their helpers, Jews who used theology to blame the victims, and Jews who rescued Torahs:

And did you know that Israel was one of the first countries to offer aid? Your State Department at work.

I did my roundup some time back with my short and not so sweet entry. In that I link to the geophysics of the delta and why it has the problems it has. Then I confront the fact that the city is sinking and everything we have done has made it worse and *then* offer a way to rebuild elsewhere and still keep the city active. Then I did one to finally give the city's population the ability to sail away from the coast and serve as *instant* recovery base afterwards.
Finally, I ask to the people of the Republic: what did you do when you found out the problem is unfixable?
And some pointed wrap-up that things were even worse than I knew on the geophysics side.
The hard work is not in casting blame, anyone can do that easily... but when you point one finger in blame, three point back in accusation at the accuser. Do *nothing* else but blame and you are thrice blamed and a cause of new problems by doing *nothing*. And one finger points to the ground to remind you that if blame is your memorial, then your life's work will be disregarded.
When done pointing the finger, open that hand out to help and build something better.
So many searching for bright, new ways to bring the Republic down.
So few looking to build it up.
