Rosh Chodesh Ellul begins this Thursday evening
As a harbinger of new beginnings and the upcoming ritual marking the season of new beginnings . . . . Our latest fun sidebar item (lower left right, under the still-grossly-underpopulated and intermittant del.icio.us tag cloud as part of a revamped section of the blogroll) is a javascript which shows the phase of the moon, using data from my computer clock.
Since the Jewish calendar is partly a lunar one, and since all Jewish months begin on the new moon, and most Jewish holidays begin on some phase of the moon, and since many of us live where the moon isn't easy to see . . . . a visual reminder is a viscerally satisfying thing.
(Thanks to Rachel Velveteen Rabbi Barenblat for turning me on to this widget.)
