Schlesinger for Senate: The Elephants Stomp One of Their Own
While Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont duke it out for the Senate, let's not forget the third member of this political menage a trois, Republican Senate candidate Alan Schlesinger.
We should remember him, because the election wizards at the Republican National Committee certainly aren't lavishing attention on him. In fact, according to Sunday's New York Times, the GOP is explicitly hanging Schlesinger out to dry:
Facing Senator Joseph I. Lieberman’s independent candidacy, Republican officials at the state and national level have made the extraordinary decision to abandon their official candidate, and some are actively working to help Mr. Lieberman win in November.Despite Mr. Lieberman’s position that he will continue to caucus with Democrats if re-elected, all three Republican Congressional candidates in Connecticut have praised Mr. Lieberman and have not endorsed the party’s nominee, Alan Schlesinger. An independent group with Republican ties is raising money for Mr. Lieberman, who has been a strong supporter of President Bush on the Iraq war.
The President and Connecticut's GOP governor, M. Jodi Rell, aren't endorsing Schlesinger either, whom the Times says is bitter about the relentless stomping by his fellow elephants.
I don't blame him.
His campaign website has a dusty feeling, with the "latest news" being posted in April. Schlesinger's platform lists five topics, such as immigration and medicare, with nothing about Iraq, as if it isn't happening. I get the sense he's not even trying, and the GOP is doing nothing to support a loyal soldier.
And that's too bad, because Schlesinger's background makes him a good choice for higher public office. He's a graduate of Penn's Wharton School, so he's smart academically. He served six terms in the CT Legislature, and two terms as mayor of Derby CT, so he knows state and local politics. Unfortunately, he's the right man running for the wrong office. I wish him well, and I wish the CT GOP would give him a little more stroking, if not for Schlesinger then for the health of the party.
Even sacrificial lambs deserve a pretty ribbon around their necks.

Sure, I'd like to see both Lamont and Lieberman lose, but it just ain't gonna happen.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but just about everyone else does. Me, I just sit around and make jokes about it. Suits me fine.

I'm in California, so I don't relly have any say in how things go down in Connecticut, but if I did, I'd vote for Lieberman over Schlesinger, and I am a pretty staunch Republican. Schlesinger really doesn't have a chance at winning and if Lamont won he would be a huge threat to the GWOT and on national security in general. I'd imagine that the GOP has done the same calculus and came to the same conclusion I have.

Right after your post in my feed reader, was this this post by Instapundit which suggests that Conncecticut's liberals are doing the same calculus with regard to Lamont as I just described above with regard to Schlesinger. Anyway, I thought you might find it interesting.

Schlesinger is AFAIK to the left of Lieberman on the war. A Republican defeatist does the party far more harm than a Democratic one...
