Ellul 11: Stuff happens
Teshuva contemplations every day until Yom Kippur here. You can also find the link on the sidebar under "Yamim Noraim." Rabbi Amy Scheinerman's guide to teshuvah using the text of Psalm 27 focuses this week on Regret.
Devarim 32:39
is the text of one of the oldest songs of the Ugandan Abudabaya Jewish community, using a traditional Malakite melody. It is sung on solemn occasions like Tisha B'Av, the Yamim Noraim, funerals. (Field recording with cicadas)
Devarim 32:39 - See then that I, I am He.(translation: Everett Fox)
There is no God beside Me.
I myself bring death, bestow life.
I wound and I myself heal:
and there is from my hand no rescuing!
Apropos the divine order I spoke of last week:
stuff happens
you say it just happens
that's itbut that ain't true
stuff doesn't just happen
there is an order
and you rely on itif stuff just happened
you'd be afraid to
get out of bed in the morningyou wouldn't be able to plan
your dinner
forget about a careerit is true
that some things make no sense
but most of it does
that's why when it doesn't
it hurts so much
