Fury in Fairfield County: Shays v. Farrell
With all the focus on Lieberman vs. Lamont, people tend to overlook the hard-fought races for the House of Representatives in Connecticut. They also pit incumbent GOP members against anti-war Democrats. In my district, Chris Shays faces a rematch with former Westport first selectwoman Diane Farrell, who almost beat him in 2004. Having lived in Westport, I know how effective Farrell is as a campaigner and as the avatar of upper-class Fairfield County sensibilities.
The two have scheduled 11 campaign debates, which I recall got rather testy in 2004, so they should be worth attending in the even more heated 2006 atmosphere. As far as I can tell, both candidates are avoiding the key issue -- deer overpopulation in Southwestern Connecticut. But that's just my opinion.
This will get the discussion going, with more to come later. An excellent overview of these CT races comes from that young whippersnapper Bob Novak, writing in Human Events.
