A dubious distinction
Via LGF, the latest hate-crime stats from the FBI. The good news is that hate-crimes in 2005 dropped 6% from the year before. The bad news is that in the religious bias category, Jews still lead the list by a large percentage.
Hate crimes motivated by religious bias accounted for 1,314 offenses reported by law enforcement. A breakdown of the bias motivation of religious-bias offenses showed:
* 68.5 percent were anti-Jewish.
* 11.1 percent were anti-Islamic.
* 7.8 percent were anti-other (unspecified) religion.
* 4.6 percent were anti-Catholic.
* 4.4 percent were anti-Protestant.
* 3.2 percent were anti-multiple religions, (i.e., groups of individuals of varying religions).
* 0.4 percent were anti-Atheism/Agnosticism.
I recall reading an article about the 2002 report, [PDF] and the breakdown was much the same. In spite of a bried rash of anti-Muslim violence which petered out within days after the terrorist attacks of 9-11, hate-crimes against Jews far outnumbered those for any other religious group (but not across the board for hate crimes in general) in 2001. Most of these were vandalism and intimidation, with a small percentage being assault. There were more than twice as many hate crimes involving race than involving religion.

It's especially dubious when you consider that we make up such a small percentage of the population. The anti-semites must have really had to work hard to get the crimes against Jews stat up to 68% of the national total.
