Sa'id [part of Syrian intelligence] had instructed Hindawi to use a female carrier, "because it is more secure." This was no problem, for Hindawi had already been involved since late 1984, probably under orders from Syrian intelligence, with Ann-Marie Doreen Murphy. Murphy, a 32-year-old, tall, slim woman, was described aptly by the court prosecutor as a "simple, unsophisticated Irish lass and a Catholic." Newly arrived from Sallynoggin in South Dublin, she was working as a maid in the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane when she met Hindawi. Hindawi made her pregnant twice. The first pregnancy, which occurred early in 1985, ended in miscarriage. He then disappeared between April and September 1985. She became pregnant a second time in November 1985. But before she discovered her condition, Hindawi had left the country again. When he called from Berlin in January 1986 and learned what had happened, he wanted nothing to do with it. Hindawi pressed her, rather, to abort the fetus. In Murphy's words, "He did not want to know about it. He wanted me to get rid of the thing." This she refused to do. Instead, she began making plans to return by herself to Ireland.

Then, to her surprise, Hindawi turned up on 7 April 1986. Full of enthusiasm, he declared his love for her. The next day at a fast food restaurant on Oxford Street, he insisted on their immediately getting married and taking a honeymoon. He made plans for them to travel to "the Holy Land" and then cross to Jordan where, three days later, the ceremony would take place. But Hindawi insisted on traveling separately, saying that his employer had paid for him on a later flight. Murphy, innocent of Middle Eastern politics, accepted all these plans unquestioningly (even that a Jordanian would return home through Israel). Hindawi demanded that she not tell anyone about their plans and got unreasonably angry on learning that she had informed two of her sisters, a friend, and the friend's husband. Further, he wanted to keep their story secret from the airline and from Israeli customs personnel. With this in mind, he supplied her with answers to the standard questions she would be asked going to Israel. Then he quizzed her and coached her to give the right replies.

As noted in the earlier posting, Murphy dropped out of sight after the episode. Determined googling turned up almost nothing. Fortunately, a KT reader in Israel found this article in the Irish Examiner from October 2004, when Murphy offered to testify to block Hindawi's bid for parole. It says in part,

Ms Murphy is still haunted by the memory of how Hindawi tried to send her to her death by packing her hand luggage with Semtex plastic explosives.

But she has broken an 18-year silence to declare that she was prepared to go to London to ensure he serves his full term.

“He must rot in jail forever. If the House of Lords wants me to come and show them why then I will do it,” said Ms Murphy, now 50.

“That man is pure unadulterated evil. You are talking about someone who has never shown even a flicker of remorse or once said he was sorry.”

It's not known whether Murphy testified. However, in October 2004, British courts refused to grant Hindawi an early release, according to this article from the Times of London.
